Double knock out red rose

Double KNOCK OUT® out roses have been a hit since they were first introduced in 2000 and were an immediate All American Award winner. Bred by Wisconsin rose breeder William Radler, these varieties of roses were especially developed to be low maintenance and to survive colder temperatures than most other roses. Now, there are seven different varieties of this rose and two of them are double KNOCK OUT® roses.

The Double KNOCK OUT® variety are just like the originals but have double flowers instead of singles.

They are dazzling in their brilliant reds and bold pink colors. Believe it or not, the double KNOCK OUT® type are even more disease and pest resistant than the plants with single flowers. The usual rose culprits–powdery mildew, rust and black spot–will not be found on this rose.

Whether you plant them singly or in groups, double KNOCK OUT® roses will stand out in any yard.

You don’t even have to remove the dead flowers as the plant just drops the old blossoms to the ground and grows brand new ones every five to six weeks. You don’t have to selectively prune these roses either, just cut them back to around 18 inches high at the end of the growing season.

Double KNOCK OUT® roses are the closest thing to maintenance free you can find in a rose.

You don’t have to worry about them if you should ignore them for a few days or if the weather gets too hot or too humid. At three to four feet high and just about as wide, they are the perfect height for a hedge or a border. This shrub rose looks fantastic against a traditional white picket fence.

The double KNOCK OUT® roses are very thick with up to around twenty-five petals and you can expect an abundance of blooms from spring until the first hard frost of the fall. All you have to do is plant double KNOCK OUT® roses with plenty of compost/fertilizer and water them well. They are absolutely perfect if you have limited time for gardening and don’t want to deal with fussy roses.

The vivid double red or pink flowers on these plants grow in both full sun and partial shade.

They are perfect for shadier areas of the yard where traditional roses may have problems. Although well-drained soil is perfect, double KNOCK OUT® roses can adapt to less than perfect soil conditions. Still, avoid planting them where could be standing water after heavy rains.

Whether you live where weather is cold in the winter or warm, you will not have to worry about KNOCK OUT® varieties not making it through the season. They will come up again just about anywhere, although mulching is a necessity in cold winter locations. Mulching also helps in heat–it will keep the soil cool and moist.

If you like single roses, you may like double roses twice as much.

With double KNOCK OUT® roses you can enjoy red or pink flowers which are around three inches across. You don’t have to invest a lot of time in rose care and you will still get great results every year.
